Heathers movie review - Aussieboyreviews

IS HEATHERS ALL A FUNNY, DARK AND BRILLIANT TEEN COMEDY?

There is so much to say about Heathers. It’s surprising and unpredictable if you know nothing before seeing it, the humour is nothing brighter than black, and the concept and ideas are extremely intriguing. This results in a violent, yet excellent teen movie.

Aussie boy's thoughts

Heathers is a wickedly intriguing, extremely surprising and pitch-black teen comedy that lives out a teenage fantasy of criminality and rebellion. It’s very rare when these kinds of films come up, but it’s one that will leave you pleasantly surprised when you enter it knowing absolutely nothing about it, apart from the obvious fact that it’s a coming-of-age movie centred on teenagers.

If you have just discovered or know nothing about this movie, avoid ALL storylines provided by critics and movie websites. What you can know is that Heathers is NOT your typical teen comedy. This is because the humour is so devilishly dark and when one of the jokes or really exhilarating situations play out, it makes you feel like a demon to be loving this teen fantasy.

It’s also best to note that you also just have to give this movie a chance after it begins, because with what happens during the first 20 minutes, it’ll make you feel like you’re just going to sit through a borefest loaded with nothing other than teenage-girl attitude in high school. But once the premise actually picks up, this film will have you shaking in excitement wherever you’re watching.

Looking at some important film elements, Winona Ryder is the perfect actress for Veronica, the main character, and Christian Slater is absolutely brilliant as her boyfriend who, without spoiling or giving too much clues, is rebellious. Forgetting the admittedly boring 20 minutes at the beginning, the screenwriting is also very clever, fantasy-feeling and doesn’t waste any time. Heathers is just a captivating crime-comedy and teenagers will love it.
